Sony have announced a couple of new point-and-shoot cameras, with the new Cyber-shot models both featuring 5x optical zoom and Exmor R CMOS sensors. The DSC-WX50 and DSC-WX70 are due for a European release in mid March and both feature Carl Zeiss zoom lenses.

The DSC-WX50 and DSC-WX70 are broadly similar shooters, both featuring a 25-125mm f/2.6-6.3 (35mm) lens with a whopping 16.2 megapixel image sensor, optical image stabilisation and 1080i video capture.  Where they start to differ is in the screen.  The WX50 has a 2.7-inch screen (460k dot);  The WX70 however comes equipped with a larger 3-inch touch-screen LCD display (921k dot).

The NEX big thing

These little point and shoot cameras have benefitted from the trickle-down of tech from their big brothers the NEX series of compact EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens) cameras- with features such as Extra High Sensitivity making the cut, which means the ISO goes right up to 12800 giving better performance in low light conditions. The WX70 and WX50  can also capture full HD 1920 x 1080 AVCHD video at 50 fps, with a new Active Mode SteadyShot anti-shake function to cancel out the “wobbles” whilst recording handheld movies.  In-Camera filters, or Picture Effects as Sony call them like Toy Camera, Monochrome and HDR painting are also included on the spec sheet.

Both models are due for a mid-March release with prices to be confirmed.
