Aston Martin working on Tesla rivalling, 800 BHP all-electric Rapide
Aston Martin is moving into the electric car business, with a planned launch of an all-electric version of it’s Rapide model within the next two years. The car is currently under-development with a test mule for the powertrain already being put through it’s paces. The specs aren’t finalised but early indications are that car will have 800 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and a 200-mile range. The development of the vehicle was confirmed by company CEO Andy Palmer speaking at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
The electric version will supplement the existing range of petrol cars, and will be positioned above Tesla’s Model S.
Aston don’t seem to be fazed by their more established competitor Tesla, with Palmer delivering a fairly scathing rebuke of their recent “Ludicrous mode” upgrade:
“We don’t do Ludicrous because ,Ludicrous speed is stupid”
“I think that the fact that you could drive a few laps of a decent race course or race it around the Nordschleife is much more interesting than doing 500 meters in Ludicrous mode.”
The Rapide will be the first Aston model to be electrified but it won’t be the last- It will be followed by an all-electric EV, plug-in hybrid, and internal combustion version of the DBX crossover EV concept debuted at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, which should be with us by 2019.
