Google Launches Instant Search Engine

Google have unveiled their new search engine called Google Instant.  As the name suggests, search results will be delivered in real-time.  Rather than waiting for you to press search, the results will change with each keystroke that you type.

This makes it the fastest search engine so far, pretty much predicting your search term as you type it.

Marissa Mayer, VP Search Products & User Experience , explained on Google’s blog;

“You don’t really want search-as-you-type (no one wants search results for [bike h] in the process of searching for [bike helmets]),”

“You really want search-before-you-type – that is, you want results for the most likely search given what you have already typed.”

Mayer went on to explain the technology behind the new search:

“To bring Google Instant to life, we needed a host of new technologies including new caching systems, the ability to adaptively control the rate at which we show results pages and an optimisation of page-rendering JavaScript to help web browsers keep up with the rest of the system.

“In the end, we needed to produce a system that was able to scale while searching as fast as people can type and think – all while maintaining the relevance and simplicity people expect from Google.”

Google Instant should be live now in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Russia, rolling out to other regions in due course.  If you don’t seem to have it now, you can try out Google Instant at or watch a video demonstration below which cleverly features Bob Dylan!
